From smartphones and laptops to e-bikes, scooters, and even power tools, lithium-ion batteries have become the go-to energy source. They are lightweight, rechargeable, and efficient, which makes them perfect for keeping our gadgets portable and long-lasting.

But while they are generally safe, fires linked to lithium batteries are on the rise. Since 2020, incidents involving these batteries have caused deaths and injuries, often because of damage, misuse, or poor storage.

Why Do Lithium Batteries Catch Fire?

Lithium batteries can fail when something goes wrong inside the cell. This can happen if they are:

  • Damaged (for example, dropped or crushed)

  • Overcharged or charged with the wrong type of charger

  • Exposed to heat or stored in unsafe conditions

  • Poorly manufactured

When this happens, the battery can go into what is called thermal runaway, a chain reaction where the battery overheats, releases flammable gases, and may ignite.

Everyday Risks You Might Not Think About

Because lithium batteries are everywhere, fires can start in places you would not expect:

  • Charging an e-scooter in a hallway

  • Leaving a phone under a pillow while charging overnight

  • Using cheap or untested replacement chargers

  • Storing power tools or vapes in hot cars

These everyday habits can increase the risk without people realising it.

How to Stay Safe

The good news is that most lithium battery fires can be prevented with simple steps:

  • Use the right charger supplied by the manufacturer

  • Do not overcharge; unplug devices once they are full

  • Avoid charging on soft surfaces like beds or sofas where heat can build up

  • Store batteries in cool, dry places away from direct sunlight

  • Check for damage; if a battery looks swollen, cracked, or leaks, stop using it immediately

  • Buy from trusted brands; cheap, untested batteries are more likely to fail

What To Do If a Fire Starts

Lithium battery fires can be fierce and difficult to put out. If one starts:

  • Call 999 immediately

  • Do not try to move the device once it is burning

  • Get everyone out safely and close doors behind you to slow the spread of fire

Final Thoughts

Lithium batteries are part of modern life, and when used correctly, they are safe and reliable. But understanding the risks and taking simple precautions can make all the difference. By being aware and careful, you can enjoy the convenience of your devices without worrying about hidden dangers.
