We completed a bollard installation project at a UK university, installing Marshalls bollards within a large, busy public plaza.

The space is regularly used for outdoor events, so the project needed to improve security while keeping the area accessible and usable throughout the works.

The Challenge

Working in a live public space meant carefully managing the works around pedestrians and planned events.

We needed to:

  • Keep as much of the plaza accessible as possible

  • Secure work areas with suitable fencing

  • Provide clear pedestrian signage and diversion routes

  • Manage delivery delays

  • Coordinate the works around an event taking place on site

  • Install additional bollards after incorrect measurements were identified in the original tender

Temperatures also reached around 35°C during the project, adding another challenge for the team.

Our Approach

Rather than closing the entire plaza, we worked in sections, fencing off areas as the installation progressed.

Clear pedestrian signage and diversion routes helped people move safely around the work areas, while allowing as much of the plaza to remain open as possible.

When additional bollards were required, we worked closely with the client to plan the extra installation around the upcoming event.

We also kept the client updated throughout delivery delays, discussing the impact and adjusting the programme where necessary.

The Result

Improved security

Marshalls bollards were installed to provide additional protection across the public plaza.

Access maintained

Phased working allowed much of the area to remain accessible throughout the works.

Event successfully accommodated

Additional bollard works were planned around an event taking place on site.

Safe public access

Fencing, signage and clearly marked diversion routes helped manage pedestrian movement around the works.
