The St Johns Primary School security enhancement project, commissioned by RAM Building Consultants, involved a complete overhaul of the school’s boundary to improve safety and security for students, staff, and visitors.
The Challenge: Improving an Outdated and Overgrown Perimeter
The existing fencing was old and ineffective, and overgrown vegetation and trees blocked visibility and access. The school needed a strong, modern security system to protect the site and solve long-standing problems with access and perimeter control.
What We Did
Site Clearance: We began by removing old fencing, dense plants, and mature trees that obstructed the boundary and posed security risks. This work was carefully planned to avoid disrupting school activities and to keep the site clean and safe.
New Fencing System: A high-quality fencing system was installed along the entire perimeter. The design balanced strength and durability with an appearance suitable for a school environment.
Gates and Controlled Access: We installed a combination of access-controlled and manual pedestrian gates. These gates give staff flexible and secure entry options, especially during busy times such as school drop-off and pick-up.
Waste Access Improvement: Early in the project, we found that the narrow pedestrian path limited access for waste management vehicles. To solve this, we widened the path by clearing extra vegetation and integrated the new double gates into the waste route. This ensured practical daily use without compromising security.
Overcoming Challenges
Narrow Pathway: The narrow path was an unexpected issue affecting waste bin access. We worked closely with the school to redesign the route, combining gate installation and vegetation clearance. This was carefully scheduled so it did not delay the project.
Vegetation Removal: Clearing mature trees and dense plants needed to be done carefully to avoid disrupting school life and to keep the site safe and tidy.
Tight Schedule: With work taking place during the summer holidays, the team had a limited time to complete the entire project before the new school term. Efficient planning and coordination helped the team finish all fencing, gates, and pathway work on time.
Working Together for Success
Throughout the project, we collaborated closely with Catherine Wedbury from the St Johns Academy Trust. This ensured that the new fencing and gate systems met the school’s safeguarding priorities while supporting daily operations.
The Outcome: A Secure, Functional School Perimeter
The new fencing and gates provide a safe, controlled environment for everyone on site. Visibility and access have improved, and waste management is now easier and more practical. Overall, the project has strengthened perimeter security while supporting the school’s ongoing needs.
Why Good Perimeter Security Matters
For schools, especially those with busy sites, strong perimeter security is vital. It keeps pupils safe, controls who can enter the site, and supports smooth daily operations. Working with experts to design practical and effective solutions ensures long-term benefits for the whole school community.
